Description

The Massage Therapy program provides instruction in therapeutic massage with knowledge of the structure and function of the human body. Students receive training in hydrotherapy, massage law, the prevention of medical errors, and allied modalities. Graduates will be prepared for employment as a Massage Therapist.

Objective

The Massage Therapy program will prepare students for an entry level position as a Massage Therapist. Students will develop the skills necessary to meet the needs of the health care community.

The student must complete the following core courses:

Massage Therapy Major Courses: (46 credit hours)

Human Structure and Function (6 credit hours)

The body as a whole is introduced as a dynamic organic organism. How the systems are interrelated and dependent is examined.

Body Systems (6 credit hours)

The body systems are investigated and studied as separate entities in order to gain knowledge of their individual roles and importance.

Massage Theory (4 credit hours)

This course examines the history of massage. Topics covered include indications, contraindications, areas of endangerment, and general principles for giving a massage. The course examines the Swedish massage techniques that form the basics for therapeutic massage.

Therapeutic Massage (4 credit hours)

This course focuses on the overall therapeutic massage experience. Areas of concentration include therapist care and body mechanics, client draping, client positioning, interpersonal communication, palpatory skills, and joint movement.

Legal and Ethical Business Practices (6 credit hours)

This course includes an in-depth look at the requirements of the Florida Massage Practice Act. The history of massage is reviewed from its origin to the current state of the profession. Essential business principles for developing a successful massage therapy practice are discussed. Includes a discussion on the prevention of medical errors and a review of the ethical standards of conduct.

Theory and Practice of Hydrotherapy (4 credit hours)

The scientific application of water fro the purpose of therapy and rehabilitation is covered. This includes the study of the principles and practical application and the thermal effects of water and how it can be integrated with massage treatments. Topics examined include steam baths, hot packs, ice packs, and contrast baths.

Allied Modalities (4 credit hours)

This course is designed as an overview. The topics covered include health related areas such as sports medicine, clinical pathology, exercise physiology and range of motion. Also covered are the Asian bodyworks such as Shiatsu, Ayurveda, Thai Massage, and Chinese Medicine. Additionally, students study first aid, CPR and HIV/AIDS.

Pathology and Kinesiology (4 credit hours)

This course focuses on the most common disease conditions a massage therapist encounters. The etiology, prevention, and appropriate massage intervention are examined. Other topics covered include range of motion, passive range of motion, manual and resistive tests along with other orthopedic testing.

Sports Massage (4 credit hours)

This course examines how the human body responds to various sports related activities. There is an emphasis on injuries, pain and sports movement. The role of massage therapy in sports is also covered. Students are exposed to pre and post sports massage techniques and routines.

Spa Theory and Technique (4 credit hours)

This course is an overview of current trends in spa therapy. Student will study paraffin baths, hydrocollators, thermaphores, hot packs, and ice packs.
